National Older People’s Day will be celebrated in Gwynedd with the Gwynedd Older People’s Council annual conference on Tuesday, 5 October 2010.
The conference has been organised by Gwynedd Council and the emphasis this year will be on Promoting Independence. The conference will be held in Y Ganolfan, Porthmadog, and will start at 9.45am.
The morning will consist of formal presentations by Council staff which will focus on this year’s achievements in care for older people. Lunch break will be at 12.30pm and then in the afternoon there will be a chance to see what is on offer on the different stalls. As well as this, chair exercise will be held throughout the afternoon to promote keeping fit.
Ruth Marks, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales will be present and she’ll give an update on the commission’s work and there will also be a question and answer session with her at the end of the morning.
Janet Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Health and Social Care and Well Being Co-ordinator said:
“It’s great once again to celebrate older people’s contribution to our communities here in Gwynedd. The conference’s varied programme gives us a chance to show what the Council and its partners offer to older people to promote independence.
“It will be a privilege to welcome Ruth Marks once again to Gwynedd, and I look forward to the interesting dialogue that will come from the day.”
Ruth Marks, The Older People’s Commissioner for Wales added: “I look forward to visit Gwynedd and have the opportunity to find out more about the excellent work underway to improve older people’s lives.
“My visit will not only allow me to see examples of good practice that could be shared throughout Wales, but it will also be a chance for me to talk to older people from the area to find out more about the issues that concern them most.”
