Denbighshire’s award winning catering service is encouraging parents and guardians to take a fresh look at school meals as an alternative to providing their children with packed lunches.
Whilst food costs are continually rising in supermarkets, the council’s Catering Services has decided to keep the cost of a school meal at the same level as last year.
To give your child a good, nutritionally balanced packed lunch every day for a week costs an estimated £15, but at £1.90 a day children can benefit from a healthy and balanced two course meal from a menu of mostly freshly prepared food.
Also, the more parents who choose the school meal option, the more the council can keep prices down and the savings can be passed on.
Benefits of school meals include:
- Meals are freshly prepared by professionally trained staff
- Staff encourage children to try new foods
- Meals are healthy and nutritionally balanced to heklp a child’s development
- New menus are introduced on a regular basis
- A nutritional hot lunch can aid a child’s concentration through the afternoon
- Menus are seasonal with warming lunches in the winter and the option of lighter meals during the warmer weather
- Regular promotions and theme days with competitions and prizes.
Councillor Sharon Frobisher, Cabinet Lead Member for Environment, said: “Denbighshire is committed to healthy eating and our catering staff are working hard with schools to promote the health and welfare of pupils.
“We want to help young people discover and enjoy new and exciting foods that will encourage them to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
