Proposals to Increase School Places in the Llanishen Area

Cardiff Logo smallProposals will be considered at the Cabinet meeting on 10th April to provide additional English-medium and Welsh-medium primary school places in and around the Llanishen area, with a recommendation that the planned changes go out to consultation.

The proposals include increasing the capacity of either Coed Glas Primary School or Ton yr Ywen Primary School from 2 form entry to 2.5 form entry, with additional nursery places to meet increasing local demand for English-medium primary education and increasing the capacity of Ysgol y Wern from 2 form entry to 2.5 form entry, with an additional 8 fulltime equivalent nursery places to meet increasing local demand for Welsh-medium primary places.

Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Cllr Julia Magill said, “Giving young people in Cardiff the best possible learning opportunities is a priority for us. It is evident that the pre-school and school age population in and around Llanishen has been growing in recent years. We are committed to driving up standards in education across the city, and increasing primary school places will mean that we can meet local demand.”

Implementing these changes would mean an increase in English-medium places at entry to school (Reception year) of 15 places in the area. This would allow up to 315 pupils to be admitted every year. The proposals would also result in an extra 15 Welsh-medium school places, increasing the Reception level intake to 75 pupils a year.

Subject to consultation, the increased capacity would be available from September 2015.
