Welsh Conservatives today pledged to protect Wales’ communities from the risk of flooding through an innovative Blue Belt scheme to limit development in vulnerable areas.
Under the proposals, land close to lakes, rivers and coastlines could be designated as Blue Belt land to prevent future residential development.
One in 33 developments in Wales is currently sited on land at risk of flooding.
Nick Bourne (pictured), Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the National Assembly, said, “The impact of flooding on businesses and families can be devastating and cost a fortune in repairs, temporary accommodation and insurance premiums.
“Welsh Conservatives would designate land near rivers, coastlines and lakes as Blue Belt.
“Like Green Belt, residential development would effectively be prohibited to protect homes and buildings against flooding.
“By working in conjunction with the Environment Agency, we can develop this Blue Belt system to limit unsafe residential development.”
Angela Burns, candidate for Carmarthen West & South Pembrokeshire, said, “This innovative, yet straight-forward policy would put an end to irresponsible development on areas of flood risk, particularly along Wales’ coastlines.
“Costs of flood damage are expected to soar in the coming years, but by working constructively we can help prevent the damage and distress caused by flooding.”
Mohammad Asghar, candidate for South Wales East, said, “Designating Blue Belt land would be a major advance in reducing the risk of flooding.
“Areas such as the Gwent Levels are particularly vulnerable from flood waters, but by investing in preventative measures we can protect South East Wales from the devastation caused by flash floods.”
