Monmouthshire County Council is hosting its annual Carers’ Rights Day at Usk’s Glenyrafon Hotel on Thursday December 1st. It will use the occasion to arm unpaid carers and the people they care for against increasing attempts by scammers to relieve them of their cash and resources.
Carers’ Rights Day is held annually to provide information and advice to unpaid carers about benefits and support available to them. In recent years unscrupulous individuals and organisations have targeted the vulnerable and elderly on the doorstep and by postal and telephone scams. Sadly these events are increasingly common, so the council is devoting the meeting to warning about some of the tactics carers may encounter.
Introduced by Geoff Burrows, the council’s cabinet member for Social Care, Health and Housing, Carers’ Rights Day will feature a presentation by Brian Steele, a former police detective who specialises in protecting against doorstep crime. In addition, Monmouthshire’s Trading Standards service will issue advice about combating postal and telephone scams and information will be available about safety on the internet and victim support.
Unpaid carers living in Monmouthshire who wish to attend should contact Tracey Davies, Carers Co-ordinator on 01291 671902. Entry is free for Monmouthshire-based carers but booking for this event is essential. Lunch is provided and transport and respite care are available if needed.
