Pupils Learn Lessons in Litter

A campaign to educate high school students in Cardiff about reducing the amount of litter in and around their schools is being launched this week.

In response to complaints about high levels of litter in areas where there are shops close to high schools across the city, a campaign funded by Tidy Towns is working in partnership with Cardiff Council and Keep Cardiff Tidy to tackle excess litter and educate students about their responsibilities.

Five high schools from across Cardiff are taking part. Executive Member for the Environment, Cllr Margaret Jones launches the campaign in Fitzalan High in Canton on Friday when the Waste Education team will visit the school during its lunch hour to meet with teaching staff and students to raise awareness about the problems caused by litter. Enforcement Officers will also be present along routes from the school to local shops to talk to students they see dropping litter and warn them about the penalties.

The Council’s Waste Education team will continue its education roadshow by visiting Willows High in Splott, Cathays High, Llanishen High and Llanrumney High over the next month.

Pupils from each of the five schools have been chosen to represent their school in a poster and film campaign, which will be used to raise awareness among the students. ‘Schools against litter’ badges are also being distributed to promote the initiative.

Cllr Margaret Jones, Executive Member for the Environment said: “Litter collection and keeping the streets clean is a big priority for the Council.  It’s great to see the schools taking pride in their area and being active in keeping their streets clean.  Hopefully, the excellent efforts of this high schools campaign will spur people on and make a real difference in the local communities.”
