Pupils have officially named the new primary school that will replace West End Infants and Green Lane Juniors – Dewstow Primary and Nursery School.
Pupils from both schools were asked to put forward suggestions for the name of the new primary and ‘Dewstow’ proved a popular choice with every year group.
The Temporary Governing Body considered all the submissions at their meeting on 15th March 2011 and came to a unanimous decision. They noted the popularity of the submission and that the school will be in the Dewstow ward.
Mrs Gill Bray, current headteacher at West End Infants and new headteacher at Dewstow Primary and Nursery said:
“We’re thrilled that pupils had the opportunity to play such an important part in the future of the new school. We’re one step closer to opening Caldicot’s newest primary which will provide a first class learning environment.”
Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) agreed to replace the existing two schools as part of its Education Strategic Review and statutory notices were published to close West End Infants and Green Lane Junior Schools. This was agreed without any objections.
The creation of the new school completes MCC’s target of creating all-through primary schools. Green Lane Junior has already been demolished and the new school will be located on this site. The new school is currently being designed and construction will commence in August 2011.
Dewstow Primary and Nursery School is due to open in September 2012.
