Pupils urged to turn it down

Schoolchildren across the Caerphilly county borough are learning important lessons about noise and the impact it has on their hearing this week.

As part of activities linked to Noise Action Week 2011, the council’s environmental health team will be visiting primary schools within the area to raise awareness about noise issues.

They will be paying particular attention to the effects of personal mp3 players on hearing. The team have produced a special Powerpoint presentation to get the message across based on a cartoon strip called ‘Noise Action Weekly’

Four schools are taking part where pupils in Year 5/6 will be receiving a visit from the staff. The schools are Llancaeach Primary School; Tyn Y Wern Juniors School; Bryn Awel Primary School and Blackwood Primary School.

The interactive sessions will encourage the children to get involved in fun activities whilst highlighting the importance of noise nuisance. he pupils will play a number of games such as ‘higher or lower’ and ‘guess the noise’ as well as taking part in a ‘Noise Action Week Quick Quiz’.

“We are hoping these sessions will provide a useful tool to highlight noise problems and improve the health of young people,” said Sarah Tayler and Abbie Brown, Student Environmental Health Officers at Caerphilly CBC.
