At their weekly meetings at John Summers High School in Queensferry, girls, aged between 11 and 16 decided they wanted to raise money for charity and help the local community. Calling themselves the Inspirational Traveller Dimension Girls they wanted people in the wider community to consider different aspects to travellers.
Working with Alison Thomas from Flintshire Youth and Community Service and Sarah Davies from the Traveller Education Service, the group began learning new skills late last year. With help from Lynne Rowlands at Flintshire Local Voluntary Council, they designed and made Christmas cakes to be donated as gifts to the residents of a local care home.
Money was also raised for Barnardo’s their chosen charity, by making Christmas cards which they arranged to be sold on reception at Flintshire Local Voluntary Council. Meeting with Catherine Carr from Barnardo’s the girls handed over the money raised and talked with her about the work of the organisation.
Councillor Chris Bithell, Cabinet Member for Lifelong Learning said:
“It’s great to see young people volunteering to help the community. Working together and for the benefit of others is an education in itself and I applaud the girls for coming up with the ideas and giving it a go. When groups take it upon themselves to volunteer it will surely inspire others to join in. I look forward to seeing their next project.”
