Gavin Quinnell, brother of former Wales stars Scott and Craig, will return to Welsh rugby after signing a two-year contract with the Scarlets.
The powerful impact player is no stranger to playing for the Scarlets, having already played 23 times for the region between 2001 and 2006.
At 21 stone and six foot seven inches, Quinnell has an intimidating presence on the pitch. And the Scarlets are hoping he can provide the extra dimensions they need for a fresh start following a mediocre campaign last time out.
“I think I’ve got plenty to offer the Scarlets now, particularly after being out of Welsh rugby a while. My hunger to get back and play here is more than ever before,” said Quinnell.
“I’m known for being a physical player and playing rugby hard, but I just want to get better and play to the very best of my ability when I’m given the opportunity, because that shirt means a lot to me and my family.
“For me, the family connection with rugby is just an added motivation – I’m much more experienced now, and I know the weight of expectation from Scarlets fans, who are great supporters and I’m back to prove myself in my own right.”
The son of Welsh international Derek, Gavin is clearly fired up and ready to make a huge impact on the Magners league this season, whether playing lock, flanker or No8. His heart is already at the Scarlets, who finished ninth in domestic competition last season and made the quarter-finals of the Amlin Challenge Cup, and he is full of confidence when it comes to the prospects of what is still a remarkably young team.
“I followed the Scarlets last season and it’s good to see so many young players coming through. There’s the makings of a great team there and plenty of really proud, enthusiastic players who want to achieve more,” added Quinnell, who has already played at Parc-y-Scarlets once before, when he appeared for the Barbarians against his new team back in January 2009.
“It will be interesting to be part of the new set-up and be part of this squad. I’m just really looking forward to joining them and getting into pre-season training with the team next week.”
After making his debut for Llanelli nine years ago, Quinnell left Wales to play for Worcester Warriors in 2006. He played 32 times for Worcester, scoring 55 points, before moving to Viadana in 2008.
“I’ve learnt a lot and had some great experience in Italy. It’s been good to be part of a different set-up and culture and Viadana has been a good place for me to be.
“It’s good to be coming back to Wales and obviously to be back with the Scarlets is a real bonus for me, particularly in this great new stadium and with a region that I feel most at home with and passionate about.”
