Traders across Denbighshire are being reminded about a ban coming into effect today (February 1) on the use of cigarette vending machines.
The ban being introduced by the Welsh Government has come into force after an increase in the number of young smokers across the UK said they purchased their cigarettes from vending machines.
Trading Standards services across Wales will enforce the ban and businesses could face fines of £2,500 if they breach the law.
Ian Millington, Acting Trading Standards Manager, said: ” It is really important that local businesses comply with the ban. Evidence show that some youngsters have managed to buy cigarettes from these vending machines. Introducing this new law will put a stop to that.
“Whilst it will not stop those underage from finding cigarettes elsewhere, it will certainly be a step in the right direction to improve the health and well-being of our youngsters by making it more difficult for them to get their hands on tobacco.
The Welsh Government has produced a leaflet and a copy is being sent to all licencees across Denbighshire in the coming days. For further information about the ban, visit www.wales.gov.uk/topics
