Commenting on the publication of Consumer Focus Wales’ second annual report into protecting consumers from E.coli 0157, Nick Ramsay AM, Shadow Minister for Health and Social Services, said:
“We welcome the publication of this report, which reviews the progress made so far and expertly identifies the remaining challenges to improve food safety in Wales.
“While we welcome improved guidance to food businesses and public bodies about how to avoid cross-contamination from raw to ready-to-eat food, more needs to be done to empower the public with easily digestible information on compliance with food safety laws.
“Transparency and information are critical to driving up standards. Consumers need to be able to access simple, clear and authoritative information about hygiene standards in food outlets so they can make an informed choice.
“Business owners who defy basic hygiene regulations will then be forced by popular demand to clean up their act or leave the industry.”
