Speaking ahead of his short debate today on Dark Skies in Wales, Shadow Minister for Finance Nick Ramsay AM said:
“There is no doubt that light pollution is getting worse and is denying many of us the sight of stars at night.
“Even more worrying is the possible link between light pollution and ill-health. Research has shown that exposure to night light can disrupt the body’s production of melatonin, increasing an individual’s risk of developing oestrogen-related malignancies, such as breast cancer.
“The night sky is an inheritance for future generations to marvel at and deserves protection.
“Unlike many other forms of pollution, light pollution is reversible. Lights can be shielded or replaced with more appropriate designs, and wattages can be adjusted appropriately.
“I hope that this debate will shake up the Government to take the matter much more seriously than it has in the past.”
