Commenting on a report from Capital Economics concluding that the Welsh economy is likely to underperform the rest of the UK for the rest of the decade, Nick Ramsay AM, Shadow Minister for Business, said:
“Consistent data shows that the UK economy is beginning to turn the corner as the UK Government continues to tackle Labour’s debt crisis and support hardworking people.
“However, many of the levers for economic growth in Wales rest with Carwyn Jones’ Labour Government, which has failed to show any urgency to turn around Wales’ economic fortunes.
“This report is further damning evidence of the decline of the Welsh economy under 14 years of successive Labour governments, which have failed to take positive steps to support small businesses in generating growth.
“Welsh Conservatives have consistently called for measures to create the conditions for private sector growth by abolishing business rates for small businesses, improving business lending and cleaning up town centres.
“Carwyn Jones must start using the levers at his control to encourage growth in the Welsh economy and not condemn Wales to poor growth and remaining the poorest part of the UK for the rest of the decade.”
