Nine young people from Caerphilly county borough have been rewarded for their hard work and success in reading.
Secondary schools from the county borough were invited to nominate their ‘Most Improved Boy Readers’ in Years 7 and 8, for an event run by the Schools Library Service.
The event, which was organised in partnership with the Public Library Service and Inclusion Services, was held recently in the Council Chamber at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters, Penallta House.
Mayor Cllr John Evans presented each boy with a certificate and a small gift, and special guest, author Phil Carradice also spoke to the audience, inspiring and entertaining the boys with some of his poetry.
Phil also personally signed a copy of one of his books for each of the boys.
Following the ceremony, the boys were then invited along to the Mayor’s Parlour where they were given additional small treats as mementoes of their special achievement.
This is the second year that the event has been held in Caerphilly county borough. It is anticipated that the event will become an annual one, particularly given the positive impact that it has had not only on the boys themselves, but also on their wider families.
Vicki Hyams, Schools Library Service Librarian said, “The Most Improved Boy Reader competition, which was part of the Read a Million Words Together in Wales campaign, was all about acknowledging the boys hard work and encouraging them for the future. I was delighted with the success of the ceremony and want to thank all who attended for their support”.
