Really Welsh aims for 2 million Daffodils in a week

The largest supplier of Daffodils in Wales, Really Welsh, is anticipating over for over 2.5 million daffodil stems in the 5 days leading up to St David’s Day this year.

Despite a slow start to the season, and a run of heavy frosts, grower Nick Reynolds is confident that his team can meet the challenge laid down by the firms retail customers.

“It’s a huge task” suggests Nick, “but we are working with the projections from our customers, as well as the weather forecast, and it looks like we will break all previous records, with over 2 million stems being planned for Tesco stores across Wales alone, and with Waitrose and the Spar looking for a further half a million Welsh flowers”

Weather is key to this most traditional crop, which until Nick and his team planted their first bulb less than 7 years ago, was almost exclusively imported into Wales from Cornwall. Now with daytime temperatures up near 10 degrees c, and without too many frost risks next week, Nick & his team are hoping that the harvest will come in on time, unlike last year when the teams only really started picking daffodils a couple of days before St David’s Day on March the first.

“We are undoubtedly in a much better place than we were a year ago” adds Nick, “and this year we’ve flowers in North Wales to add to the 10 million stems planned in the South….. all we have to do now is pick and deliver them…..”
