A scheme which offers life changing experiences for young people is recruiting new members.
The Neath Port Talbot Open Gold Centre is offering an opportunity to undertake the ultimate challenge as part of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Based at Llangatwg Comprehensive School, the centre is now enrolling for a September start.
“It has been running for six years and is the biggest and most successful organisation of its kind in the country,” says Council Leader Ali Thomas.
“Every year over 40 young people become involved with the centre which is funded and run by Neath Port Talbot Council’s youth service.
“The Open Gold Centre is open to 16-23 year olds living in Neath Port Talbot. The scheme provides the training which leads to a challenging expedition in July and tests all the skills needed for personal development.
“The final ten day expedition takes place in Devon and Cornwall when all the young people take part in a range of outdoor activities.
“Young people who want to join do not need to have the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.”
Councillor Thomas added, “Neath Port Talbot leads the way in Wales for our excellent Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
“It is challenging and rewarding and young people learn not only new skills but their own ability for team work and potential for personal achievement.
“It is indeed a life changing experience.”
