The Chair of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Hilary McGuill, has launched a ‘recycle your cycle’ initiative at the Gronant Den – as part of International Play Day. The Gronant Den is Flintshire’s Rural North Adventure Playground and is registered with the Care & Social Services Inspectorate, Wales (CSSIW).
The Gronant Den encourages adventurous play, led by the children themselves, but is facilitated by qualified play-workers. Councillor McGuill is keen to encourage members of the public to donate their unwanted bikes to the recycling scheme, where they could be used as part of the children and young people’s play experiences.
Councillor McGuill said: “Many of you, I am sure, have bicycles that are in good working order, taking up room in your garages and sheds, that have long ago been outgrown by your children and grand children, but are just too good to throw away.
“I am appealing to residents to recycle those cycles by either giving them to a needy child or family you know or else phoning Community Play-worker, Ruth Jones, who is a qualified bike mechanic, to arrange for a drop off point where the bikes can be collected and, after checking them out, they can be used in our Play Schemes.
“What might seem to be a slightly rusty, cob-webbed bike to you could offer a world of opportunities to a child.”
If you have a bike which you would like to donate to the Recycle your Cycle scheme, please contact Ruth Jones, Community Play-worker, on 07824 498445.
