Recycling: one step forward or two steps back?

Denbighshire’s residents are recycling more than anybody else in Wales, and they want it to stay that way!

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) is consulting right now on whether councils should be made to change their recycling systems in favour of a system called ‘kerbside sort’.

WAG thinks kerbside sort systems are better because council workers manually sort through the materials at the roadside, and leave behind any items that shouldn’t be there. However, we believe our ‘commingled system’ is better because it is simple and convenient for our residents.

A recent survey of residents found over three times as many said they wanted to use the commingled system rather than kerbside sort.

We need you to tell WAG what you think – especially if you are one of the people who has started recycling more because of our new systems.  WAG funds nearly all of the council’s recycling activities, so we have to take this very seriously.  As part of its consultation WAG states: “kerbside sort systems are just as popular with residents as commingled collections…” We don’t believe this to be true.

Question 22 of the Welsh Assembly Government’s consultation is the one that we would like you to answer.  The question is: Should central government withhold funding from councils that refuse to provide the type of services that central government deem to be the best?

WAG is asking this question because they want us to STOP using our current system, and go back to the system that we used to use (prior to April 2009). They want to introduce financial controls to force us down this route.
