Red Arrows among festival fun this summer

Airborne acrobatics is among the fun people can look forward to in Swansea this summer.

July sees the return of the Wales National Air Show which has been confirmed as one of main headline events that will make up this year’s Swansea Bay Summer Festival in the city.

The Air Show is being held on the promenade on Saturday July 9 and Sunday July 10 and will feature a performance from the Red Arrows in the skies above the city as well as a range of other aeronautical and land-based activities.

Other events already confirmed include the inaugural Gower Stand-up Paddling Festival on May 28 and May 29 and the return of the popular Admiral Swansea Bay 10K on September 25.

News of the final festival line-up comes in the wake of latest figures that show tourism contributed £317 million to the Swansea economy in 2010 – a three per cent increase on 2009.

Frances Jenkins, Swansea Council’s Strategic Manager for Tourism, Marketing and Events, said: “This is the eleventh year of the Swansea Bay Summer Festival which runs from may to September and offers a range of events to suit all interests and ages. And once again, the Festival has a full and exciting programme.

“The Wales National Air Show is now established as a bi-annual event and was a huge success when we staged it in 2009. This is a fantastic free event and we anticipate it will attract even more this year than the 75,000 plus that attended in 2009.

“Events that have the ability to draw this volume of visitors certainly provide a boost to the local economy and we’d encourage local businesses to think creatively about how they can take advantage of the opportunity that major events present.”

The Festival kicks-off in just over a week’s time with Clyne in Bloom throughout May to give people the chance to see picturesque Clyne Gardens at their most scenic.

Other events making up the Festival include the Mumbles Musical Mile Festival from April 29 to May 2 and the Gower Walking Festival from June 4 to June 19.

Escape in the Park is also returning on June 11 and the Urdd National Eisteddfod will be held in Felindre from May 30 to June 4.

Other highlights include Outdoor Theatre at Oystermouth Castle on August 3 and August 4 and a World Party event on August 27.

Organisers of events who’d like their activities included on the Swansea Bay Summer Festival website are asked to contact the Council’s Marketing Team on 01792 635433.
