The Aberystwyth RNLI lifeboat was called out in the early hours of Tuesday 22 June following reports of the sighting of a distress flare.
The lifeboat was launched at 1.08am after a member of the public telephoned Milford Haven Coastguards to report that they had seen a red distress flare approximately three to four miles north-west of Aberystwyth.
The lifeboat was quickly on scene and started to search the area. A white parachute flare was fired by the lifeboat to illuminate the area, and also to enable the informant to confirm with local Coastguards the vicinity of the flare they had sighted.
An area search by the lifeboat, and Coastguards on the shoreline found no trace of any vessel in distress, and with no boats being reported as overdue, it was decided that the sighting had possibly been a Chinese lantern released earlier in the night by a bonfire party near the base of Constitution Hill, and the search was called off.
