A youth centre in Ystradgynlais has benefited from a £200,000 investment.
The Youth and Community Centre in Penrhos has officially reopened after improvements to facilities for young people in the town.
The centre now boasts a modern teaching kitchen, ICT communication and teaching room, a coffee bar area, craft room, music recording facilities and public meeting areas.
Youth club members have had a say on the design, décor and resourcing of the facility which also boasts outside facilities such as a multi-use games area, a skatepark and extensive playing fields.
The upgrade project was funded by a £95,000 capital grant from the Welsh Assembly Government with £95,000 match funding from Powys County Council. It is the latest in a series of ongoing work by Powys County Council to upgrade youth centres and create centres of excellences. Other projects have been completed at Newtown and Brecon.
Cllr Gwyn Gwillim, Powys County Council’s Board Member for Youth Services, said: “I’m delighted with this new facility. The feedback we have received from young people to date has been excellent.”
Huw Lewis, the Welsh Assembly Government’s Deputy Minister for Children said: “It is essential that our young people have access to modern community facilities and I am delighted that the young people of Ystradgynlais and the whole community can benefit from the newly refurbished youth club. I’d like to congratulate everyone involved for all the hard work and effort that has gone into this project.”
During the opening, presentations were also made to youth club members for their achievements over the past year.
Ystradgynlais Youth Club runs for four evenings a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) from 7-9.30pm. The junior football operates on Saturday mornings and the facilities are open for hire at other times depending on availability. For more information telephone 01639 843711.
