Pembrokeshire householders whose waste is collected on Fridays are being urged to note the refuse collection changes over the Christmas period.
Leaflets will be distributed to affected homes to inform residents when to put out their waste for collection.
The enforced changes come into effect as Christmas Day falls on a Friday. With no collection scheduled for Boxing Day, a special service will run on Sunday, December 27th.
Collections scheduled to take place on Friday, January 1st will take place on Saturday, January 2nd.
Collections falling on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are unaffected over this period.
Normal service will resume from Monday, January 4th.
Meanwhile, residents are being urged to recycle as much of their waste as possible over the festive season.
Typically, up to 30% more waste is placed out for collection over this period. In particular, householders are being asked to consider how much food they throw out.
“If your home is serviced by food waste collections, please make use of it as rotting food in landfill produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas,” said the Spokesperson for the Environment and Regulatory Services, Councillor Ken Rowlands.
“By using the food waste service, residents will be helping the environment as the waste will be turned into compost and used on the land. This is not to mention the savings we can make on paying landfill tax.
“The pressure is on for the Authority to maintain the current recycling target rate of 40% and we would ask residents to be mindful of the waste they are producing this Christmas,” he added.
Top Tips for reducing your Waste this Christmas:
- Plan your food portions and don’t buy more than you need. Food waste amounts to a good proportion of the extra waste we generate at this time of year.
- Defrost your freezer. This clears up space for you to store any leftovers and makes your appliance more efficient.
- Use your nearest recycling point to dispose of your glass bottles and jars, and place all tins, cans, cardboard and paper inside your orange bag (but no foil-printed wrapping paper please)
- Donate any unwanted gifts or clothes to your local charity shop or swap them via the internet.
- Use brown paper to wrap up any presents. This can be easily recycled through your orange bag.
Make a New Year’s resolution to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as you can!
