Renewed appeal into Porthmadog murder

Police are renewing their appeal for information having today released photographs of items found discarded following the murder of Ffion Wyn Roberts.

The items, including Ffion’s handbag, a pair of blue extra large tracksuit bottoms and a training shoe were found near the sluice gate in Porthmadog on the afternoon of Saturday April 10.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Peter Chalinor explained: “It is imperative that we speak to the owner of the training shoe and the tracksuit bottoms, which were discarded near to Ffion’s handbag on the night that she was murdered.”

“We would also like to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of the sluice gates up to 14.00 hours on Saturday April 10.”

He added: “A total of 44 staff are still working on the investigation into Ffion’s murder. North Wales Police remain committed to bringing the person or persons responsible for her death to justice.”

“I can assure the people of Porthmadog that in line with normal police practice the investigation has been assisted by the National Policing Improvement Agency and the Forensic Science Service, and that all lines of enquiries are being pursued and everything possible is being done to establish the truth as to what happened to Ffion.”

“Local people should also be reassured that incidents like this are extremely rare and there is nothing at the moment to suggest that this incident is related to any other.”

The last murder in this area was in 1982.

Facts

  • Since the murder investigation was launched in April police have: Collected over 1800 hours of CCTV in which they are in the process of viewing
  • Interviewed over 4900 people and statements have been taken from 406.
  • 722 exhibits have been generated and 77 have been sent for forensic examination.
  • Found that only one container of similar shoes was delivered to the UK in December 2009 12 pairs of the shoes were sent to each factory shop in Porthmadog, Barmouth and Pwllheli.
  • Over half of the shoes have been sold – half of those for cash and half by card
  • The tracksuit bottoms are believed to have been sold in Ethel Austin – checks are still being made on this.
