Reorganisation of education in the Gader catchment area

On Thursday, 14 July 2011, Gwynedd’s Full Council meeting will consider recommendations to reorganize education in the Gader catchment area, Dolgellau.

This follows support from the Council’s Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Committee and Board without opposition. The recommendations were prepared following a series of local meetings in the Gader catchment area.

Gwynedd Council Education Portfolio Leader, Councillor Liz Saville Roberts said:

“I greatly appreciate the fact that local discussions have been successful, and that Gwynedd Council is moving ahead with a general consensus to reorganize primary and secondary schools in Dolgellau and the surrounding communities.”

The recommendations which will be considered by the full Council on 14 July include:

  • to establish a multi-site Area School from September 2013 – with one located at either Brithdir or Ieuan Gwynedd, Rhydymain and the other on the current Dinas Mawddwy site. This means that either Brithdir or Ieuan Gwynedd in Rhydymain would close as a school. Ysgol Llanfachreth would close as part of this proposal with the provision being offered in the area school
  • supporting the intention to consult on the principle of establishing a multi-site lifelong learning community (school) 3 to 16 years for Dolgellau on the sites of Ysgol Gynradd Dolgellau and Ysgol y Gader, and improvements to the primary school site buildings
  • delaying the discussions in the west of the catchment for the time being (Llanelltyd, Clogau, Ganllwyd and Friog area) whilst ensuring that this part of the catchment will have priority in the next part of the schools reorganisation process

If the full Council supports the recommendations, the proposals will be the subject of a consultation in the autumn.
