Reorganisation of education in the Gader catchment area

At a meeting of the full Council held yesterday (14 July), Gwynedd councillors have voted in favour of reorganising education in the Gader catchment area, Dolgellau.

The recommendations which have been approved by the full Council on 14 July include:

  • establishing a multi-site Area School from September 2013 – with one located at either Ysgol Brithdir or Ysgol Ieuan Gwynedd, Rhydymain and the other on the current Ysgol Dinas Mawddwy site. This means that either Ysgol Brithdir or Ysgol Ieuan Gwynedd in Rhydymain would close as a school. Ysgol Llanfachreth would close as part of this proposal with the provision being offered in the area school
  • supporting the intention to consult on the principle of establishing a multi-site lifelong learning community (school) 3 to 16 years for Dolgellau on the sites of Ysgol Gynradd Dolgellau and Ysgol y Gader, and improvements to the primary school site buildings

Gwynedd Council Education Portfolio Leader, Councillor Liz Saville Roberts said:

“I greatly appreciate the fact that local discussions have been successful, and that Gwynedd Council is moving ahead with a general consensus to reorganize primary and secondary schools in Dolgellau and the surrounding communities.

“Following this decision, we will now move ahead to undertake further work on the location of the area school which will be located either in Brithdir or Rhydymain in partnership with the local councillors.”

The proposals will now be the subject of a consultation in the autumn.
