Bridgend County Borough Council is carrying out specialist repair work on the Old Stone Bridge in Bridgend town centre.
Following approval from Cadw, the work will see repairs made to paving along the entire length of the bridge – a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade II* Listed Building which dates back to the fifteenth century.
Because of the historic nature of the bridge, skilled craftsmen will follow traditional methods for carrying out the repairs using materials that are as close to the originals as possible.
With the majority of the repairs located near the Angel Street end of the bridge, the work will mean that parts of the bridge will have to temporarily close to allow materials such as lime mortar to set properly.
A pedestrian diversion will be in place across the nearby footbridge at the old Embassy Cinema and the work will be carefully managed so that access is maintained to businesses near the Dunraven Place end of the Old Stone Bridge. Wherever possible, access to the Angel Gateway will also be maintained.
Deputy Leader David Sage said: “The Old Stone Bridge is an important part of Bridgend’s heritage and gave the town its name.
“These essential repairs have been approved by Cadw and will be carefully carried out to ensure that the bridge’s historical and cultural importance remains intact.”
