Young people in Sandfields East and Aberavon can look forward to getting new youth club facilities in the near future after residents identified this as a priority issue for the community. The Renewal Area celebrated its fifth anniversary in August and, to mark this milestone, residents were asked to vote for a project that they would like to see delivered in the area.
During the month of October, the Renewal Area team circulated voting slips to all residents. Analysis of the returned slips has shown that the majority of residents are keen to see new youth club facilities in the area.
The Renewal Area Team will now work closely with partners, including the Youth Service, Communities first, Keep Wales Tidy and the local youth group WTC MEND to deliver the project.
Luke Price and Jodi Boal spokespeople for WTC MEND said:
“Over the past few years people our age have really enjoyed things like The Hopkin Street Multi Use Games Area, Community Garden and the Rolling Zone Youth Bus, but it would be great to have a proper youth club. It is brilliant news that people have voted for us to have our own youth club and we can’t wait to make it happen.”
Councillor Leader Ali Thomas added:
“Youth clubs provide a safe environment where young people can socialise, make new friends and enjoy activities. They also help to reduce anti-social behaviour in the community by encouraging young people to do something positive in their spare time, rather than spending it on the streets. With this in mind, I am sure that the whole community will benefit from this project.”
