Neath Port Talbot residents are being warned by council Trading Standards and Housing staff to be on the lookout for bogus individuals claiming to be from the council’s grants office.
The warning comes after locals have been targeted, often during the evening and offered false heating and insulation grants.
Officers believe people are being asked for their personal banking details which the scammers tell them is where the grant will be paid, or as an upfront payment which has to be made by the homeowner.
Council Leader Ali Thomas said, “This is a scam and I would urge residents to always ask for the full name and telephone number of those calling to their house”.
He added, “Find out what scheme the fraudsters are offering and never give banking details or money upfront to someone who has knocked your door. You can contact the Home Energy Efficiency Schemes Wales on 0800 316 2815 to find out if you are entitled to any grants.”
