Residents from all walks of life have been airing their views on how the Council budget should be spent – and what services matter the most to them.
They met with Council staff and members as part of the valuable ongoing Budget consultation process to ensure investment is targeted where it is needed the most, based on what communities tell us.
As the authority begins to respond to the huge financial pressures and challenges it is facing as a result of the Spending Review from the Coalition Government in Westminster, public opinion and support is more important than ever.
And that is what was gathered at interactive roadshows that took place at Morrisons in Porth, Asda in Aberdare and Llantrisant Leisure Centre this week.
Residents were given the chance to hear more about the financial situation the Council faces, and then demonstrate where they feel money should be spent, using virtual money they were given to “spend”.
As well as the sessions in supermarkets, the Council has also been working with a Citizens’ Panel that represents people of all ages and backgrounds and helps in the budget-setting process.
Sessions have also taken place with specialist groups, such as the Disability, Mental Health and Older People’s Forums.
Cllr Maureen Webber, who is Cabinet Member for Community Engagement and Council Business, attended many of the sessions in order to secure the views of residents.
She said: “I am a huge advocate of ensuring we have information and views from as many people as possible so we are clear that our priorities reflect their priorities.
“This year, such consultation is even more important due to the difficult financial position we find ourselves in – that is why I am so pleased people have shown their support and joined this process.
“The next stage is to collate the views of all of those who have taken part this week and ensure their priorities are identified and reflected in the budget process.”
