Members of the public will be given the chance to air their views on a proposed new look for Maerdy.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has been successful in securing £340,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Heads of the Valleys Programme to undertake the important work on behalf of the community.
The funding will enable the renewal of street lighting and street furniture, the refurbishment of pavements and public spaces, resurfacing of carriageways and better access to the area.
It is hoped the overall investment will help create a fresh and appealing new look for Maerdy.
With work set to begin in Summer 2011, public exhibitions have been organised for next month to enable residents to see for themselves some of the options and meet with staff who will be undertaking the work.
Visitors can also air their views on their preferred schemes to ensure the regeneration work reflects the wishes of the community.
The events take place at Maerdy Community Centre between 1pm and 7pm on Tuesday, January 18 and Wednesday, January 19.
Cllr Paul Cannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Safer Communities, said: “We were pleased to be able to secure this investment for Maerdy. The scheme forms part of a wider project that also includes Hirwaun Village also.
“The funding from Heads of the Valleys enables us to work with residents, businesses and other stakeholders in Maerdy to identify regeneration works to create an appealing town centre that benefits all.
“It is only by securing such important external investment on behalf of our communities that we are able to continue such work to regenerate communities to not only benefit those who live and work there, but to attract new visitors and investment.”
