Residents of Colwyn Bay Honour a Local Hero

MP for Clwyd West, David Jones MP officially opened a memorial footpath to honour the passing of a local hero to Colwyn Bay, Mr Cliff Prout, on Friday 16th December.

Mr Prout was awarded the MBE two years ago “for services to the environment and to the community in Old Colwyn, North Wales”.

The footpath was commissioned by several organisations including the Old Colwyn Environmental Federation, the Old Colwyn East Residents’ Association and Conwy County Borough Council in recognition of Mr Prout’s energetic work within the local community, and his commitment to the environment.

The route runs along the North Wales coastal path from the bottom of Beach Road to Coed Coch Road, Colwyn Bay.  Funding was obtained from North Wales Housing Association to purchase 3 plaques which have been placed at points along the path.

David Jones said:

“This is a wonderful memorial to a man who I have previously described as the mainstay of several environmental groups in the Colwyn Bay area.

“Mr Prout was heavily involved in Colwyn in Bloom.  He was a man of extraordinary energy; I used to refer to him as the indefatigable Cliff Prout, which he said made him sound like a battleship”.

The event was attended by Mrs Freda Prout, her daughter, Kay Prout, and local county councillors were also in attendance.   The event was kindly organised by Cllr Brian Cossey.
