Residents urged to be vigilant about council tax scam

Caerphilly County Borough Council is urging residents to be vigilant about a scam regarding council tax payments.

The council has recently received a call from a county borough resident who had been contacted by a person claiming to be from the ‘Government Council Federation’. The caller advised the resident that she was due a loyalty payment of a substantial amount for paying her council tax on time.

The resident’s bank details were then requested in order to process the reimbursement.

Cllr Rob Gough, Cabinet Member for Public Protection said, “I would urge everyone to remain vigilant and to never disclose bank details if they have any suspicions. If residents are in any doubt, I would encourage them to contact our Trading Standards team on 01495 235 291 for information and advice”.
