Midwives from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board were recently invited to a special event to say “thank you” for the hard work that they do.

The event focused on helping midwives to “bounce back” after a hard day and develop personal resilience.

The afternoon session was aimed at giving the midwives some down time, with ‘taster’ demonstrations by Lush cosmetics, and relaxation with pilates, aromatherapy and reflexology treatments to help relieve some stress.

The event was hosted in conjunction with Unison who kindly sponsored the day.

During the event, Suzanne Hardacre, Head of Midwifery and Gynaecological services at Cardiff and Vale, signed up to The Royal College of Midwives’ Caring for You Charter’.

The Caring for You Campaign aims to improve the health, safety and wellbeing of staff at work so they are able to provide high quality maternity care for women and their families.

In the morning session, there were talks from Dr Mark Stacey, Consultant Anaesthetist and Professor Billie Hunter, Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Professor of Midwifery at Cardiff University.

Professor Billie Hunter, RCM Professor of Midwifery at Cardiff University, said: “This was an excellent event aimed at increasing the resilience of staff to enable them to provide the best possible care to women and their babies.

“I was delighted to be invited to contribute and share insights from some of the research we’ve been undertaking.

“It’s great to see Cardiff and Vale Health Board recognising the valuable work of its midwives and taking the wellbeing of its staff so seriously”.

Suzanne Hardacre, Head of Midwifery at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said:

“We take the wellbeing of our staff very seriously and we are delighted to have signed up to the Caring for You charter to demonstrate working in partnership with our local RCM health and safety representatives to improve the health, safety and wellbeing of our midwives, students and maternity support workers.

“We are very proud of the service we provide to women, babies and their families in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

“With continued support from the RCM, our commitment to the Caring for You Charter will positively impact the care we provide to women, their babies and their families and I look forward to implementing the action plan developed by our local health and safety representatives.

“We will ensure that our signed charters are displayed throughout all areas of the service to show the commitment we have made to the campaign.”
