Commenting on the publication of correspondence between HEFCW and Welsh Ministers showing confusion in the Higher Education sector over the Welsh Labour Government’s student funding proposals, Angela Burns AM, Shadow Minister for Education, said:
“It is little wonder there is confusion in the higher education sector about how the policy will work, when the Minister is failing to engage with universities.
“Labour’s tuition fees policy was a pre-election headline grabber, which was announced before it had been properly developed or costed.
“This irresponsible policy would pour millions of pounds from the Welsh Government’s budget into universities in England at the expense of Welsh institutions.
“To avoid creating a second-rate education system in Wales, the Minister needs to drop this unaffordable and unsustainable commitment.”
