Vale residents are being reminded that the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s fortnightly green waste collection service ends for this year at the end of November.
From Monday 29 November green waste collections will be provided via the ‘ring and request’ service instead. This will operate throughout the winter until Friday 1 April 2011, when fortnightly collections will re-commence. Residents can check the date of their last fortnightly green waste collection on their Vale recycling calendar or by visiting the council’s website.
Works Manager Colin Smith explains: “To use our ring and request service simply telephone 01446 700111 and the customer service representative will be able to schedule a collection based on when the vehicle is in your area next. Please take into consideration that this can be influenced by the weather and we may be busier than usual should better than expected weather conditions encourage gardeners out in force!”
When leaving garden waste to be collected please make sure you use council-approved garden bags which are available from the Civic Offices in Barry or the Alps Offices in Wenvoe. There are two types of bags available – the reusable fabric bag (£1) or the environmentally-friendly biodegradable bag (three biodegradable bags for £1).
All garden waste is collected and taken to local farm ‘Cowbridge Compost’, where it is recycled and turned into compost. On the last Saturday of every month the farm opens for local residents to collect free compost between 9am and 12 pm, provided that they have made an appointment.
Farm manager Mike Halett said: “Residents must bring their own container, such as a bucket or a sack, to take the soil enhancer away. Our compost is ideal for gardens or allotments and we encourage residents to use a product that they have contributed to through using the Vale Council’s recycling service.”
To arrange an appointment to collect free compost you can contact Mike on 07973 894773 or 01446 772600.
