A collapse occurred at Station Row in Tirphil (near New Tredegar) on Wednesday evening (17th November).
The hole left by the collapse measures approximately 5 m x 5 m x 5 m and there seems to be evidence of a mine shaft and culvert.
Council staff have made the area safe and worked at the site throughout the night. The Coal Authority and Network Rail are also monitoring the situation.
The road remains closed and the council is working closely with various agencies to resolve the situation as soon as possible.
