Roath twitter experiment proves a hit

The Roath Neighbourhood Policing Team took part in the first South Wales Police community meeting on social site twitter last night, and it went well.

Officers who cover Splott, Tremorfa, Roath and Adamsdowm had their patrols tweeted live, and responded to community questions. It was also an opportunity to provide crime prevention advice and promote upcoming events.

The patrol updates were featured on the @swpolice twitter using the #heddluestreet, and users of the social media site from both Cardiff and across the globe posted questions and shared messages. Be sure to check out some of the tweets by entering #heddluestreet into the twitter search box.

The #heddluestreet was chosen as heddlu is the welsh word for police, e represents the online aspect, and street is what the work of neighbourhood policing is all about.

PC Mike Neate who took part said “We are always looking for new ways of engaging our community, and this trial on twitter provided real time updates on what the team are doing to tackle local issues. It’s a very interactive type of communication, and that is brilliant for policing because we want people to have a say and share problem busting ideas.”

And at one point during the patrols, PC Mike conducted a vehicle check and the update became a twitter ‘top tweet’.
