Roger Williams, Lib Dem MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, accompanied Dr David Rees, David Howells, Wyn Price and Andrew Lewis to meet with the Police and Crime Commissioner, Chris Salmon, to have an update on the police enforcement of speeding motorcyclists on mid-Wales roads.
Following a public meeting in July 2013, the police have increased their presence on the A40 and other important routes as well as increasing the unmarked police motorcyclists from one to three. The representatives of the communities stressed the need to have more speed checks, both in the villages and towns, and on the open roads as well. The delegation stressed the technical difficulties of measuring the speed of motorcyclists because of the number plate configuration.
Commenting, Roger said:
“I was very pleased with the outcome of the meeting and that the Police Commissioner had responded to their concerns. But there is a lot more work to be done, including the involvement of the public based on pilots in the Dyfed-Powys police area, but also in Norfolk and Somerset. I believe that community involvement will really help in enforcing against this dangerous behaviour. I have witnessed school children measuring speeds of passing motorists around schools, and then speaking to the motorists and asking them to keep their speed within the limits.
“I would emphasise that there are many motorcyclists who are perfectly safe and observe all of the speed limits and drive accord to the road conditions they encounter. It is a small minority that let down the majority, but a few people breaking the law can cause terrible injury or death to other road users.”
