Children aged between four and 11 can become circus stars in Newport’s libraries this summer.
Rewards and incentives are on offer for those who read six or more library books during the school holiday.
It is all part of the annual Summer Reading Challenge which this year has a circus theme – and each child who completes the challenge will receive a yo-yo and certificate.
Libraries in Newport will have a variety of activities running throughout the summer based around the theme including:
- Clowning around – write your own silly stories
- Circus conundrums – puzzles, word games, mysteries and a treasure hunt
- Animal circus – arts and crafts
- Help turn the libraries into big tops with your pictures and book reviews
Children aged between 0 and four years can take part in the Bookstart Book Crawl and can collect stickers for sharing four library books with parents, grandparents or other carers. They will also receive a special circus stars certificate.
The Summer Reading Challenge is a national campaign and it has an interactive website www.circus-stars.org.uk which links children with top authors and illustrators, has games to play and space to talk about favourite books.
Funding support for the provision of bilingual materials is provided by the Welsh Government through the Welsh Books Council.
