Open Air Theatre returns to Cardiff Castle as the Lord Chamberlain’s Men bring Shakespeare’s most famous young lovers, Romeo & Juliet to life on July 4 – 5.
The visit of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men has become something of a summer tradition with audiences returning year after year, with picnics, rugs and a glass of something chilled, to watch the drama unfold against the magnificent backdrop of Cardiff Castle.
The play charts the tragic lives of two star crossed lovers divided by the hatred between their warring families yet determined to be together.
Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: “This is a great chance to see one of Shakespeare’s most loved plays performed much as the bard would have imagined it – out in the open, by an all male cast in traditional costume. The visit of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men is a firm fixture in the Castle’s calendar and a key component of the Cardiff Festival which continues to flourish.”
2014 marks a special year for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men as they celebrate their tenth anniversary. Producer, Mark Puddle, said: “In our first years we toured to a handful of venues. Today we now play to capacity audiences at some of the most beautiful and historically important venues in the country however our core goal remains exactly the same: to bring simple, concise and clear storytelling to our audiences.”
