People of all ages are making the most of the much-improved facilities at the new-look Pontyclun Library.
The modernised and extended library in Heol y Felin recently reopened after merging with Llanharry Library and now boasts eight public access computers, a colourful children’s area, a dedicated teenage area and a community meeting room, and it is also a WiFi hot spot.
Library users can also linger for longer at the building, which is open for an additional 10 hours a week.
Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, Cllr Robert Bevan, met library staff and users when he officially re-opened the library on Weds, April 27.
“Libraries play an important role at the heart of our communities and feedback we have had from local people shows they are delighted with these new facilities,” said Cllr Bevan.
“I am pleased to see that the library is so busy and well-used by people of all ages and from all walks of life. Pontyclun Primary School pupils visit regularly and a computer drop-in session for older residents was recently held, and we hope to establish regular computer classes here soon.
“Local artists can use the display area, which currently features paintings by artist Geoff Dawson. The local PCSO and Neighbourhood officer also hold regular surgeries at the library.”
The community room is free to local groups and is already being used regularly by the Library’s reading group.
Following the official opening, local children attended a craft and storytelling session and made decorative plates to commemorate the Royal Wedding. Library staff also marked the day by dressing up in wedding outfits.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council secured a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government for more than £113,000 of funding to extend the library and refurbish it with modern furniture and shelving.
The grant for modernisation is part of a £4million package to develop the work of libraries, museums and archives throughout Wales announced by the Welsh Assembly Government.
Membership of all Rhondda Cynon Taf’s libraries is free and everyone living or working within the county borough is welcome to join. For more information log on to www.rhondda-cynon-taf.gov.uk/libraries
