The race for the Principality Premiership hotted-up on Saturday after it took a huge twist in an extraordinary round of games.
Leaders Pontypridd were beaten at Aberavon and second-placed Newport lost to Neath to leave a three-way tie at the top.
Ponty were outfoxed by the Wizards at the Talbot Athletic Ground. The hosts led 10-0 at the break through a try by wing Chris Lewis and five points from the boot of James Davies. And Ponty struggled to make any inroads in the second-half, registering just a penalty from Dai Flanagan as Aberavon hung on for a 10-3 win.
Wing David Evans was the hero for Neath as they beat Newport at the Gnoll. Alex Jones’s try gave the black-and-ambers a 13-3 half-time lead but Neath hit back after the break, Evans going over twice and Arwell Thomas booting 11 points to see the hosts to a 21-13 triumph.
Swansea join Neath and Pontypridd at the summit after a hard-fought win against Cross Keys at St Helen’s. Leading 6-3 at the break, Swansea moved away in the second-half as tries by Leigh Bevan and Scott Baldwin gave them a 16-8 victory.
Cardiff are now back in the hunt after a nervy win at Llanelli. A second-half penalty try meant the blue-and-blacks returned from Parc-y-Scarlets with a 16-10 win.
Pontypool met Ebbw Vale in a basement battle and it was the league’s bottom side who came out on top. Shaun Conner scored the only try of the game to see Pooler to a vital 14-9 victory.
Llandovery moved clear of danger with a narrow win at home to Glamorgan Wanderers. Flanker Jonathan Edwards crashed over from short range for the game’s sole try in the first-half and Cerith Rees added 8 points with the boot to see Llandovery to a 13-6 triumph.
Carmarthen Quins disposed of lowly Bedwas and eased their own relegation fears with an 18-0 win at Carmarthen Park. Back-rowers Sione Timani and Wayne Williams crossed either side of half-time for Quins as they eased to victory.
