Rumney’s unbeaten start to the season in Division One East was halted in emphatic fashion at home to Bargoed. The visitors leapfrogged their rivals in the title race with a crushing 49-18 victory.
Fly-half Jamie Howells led the way for Bargoed with 22 points, while there were also tries for skipper Lee Meads, Mike Roberts, Gareth Dare and a brace by centre Rhys Humphries.
Delighted Bargoed head coach Steve Barber said: “It is a great result. We did our homework before the game, had a gameplan and executed it.
“We said at the start of the season we were out to win the league and that’s exactly what we’re aiming for.”
UWIC stay top of the table after defeating a spirited Beddau side 37-14 thanks to 27 points from fly-half Simon Humberstone.
There was a try-fest at Caerphilly, where the hosts went down 47-35 to Ystrad Rhondda. Leading 19-10 at half-time, Caerphilly had lock Sam Feehan red-carded for a head-butt and eventually succumbed to two tries from Ystrad wing Dan John and 22 points from the boot of Dylan Jones.
Elsewhere, there were wins for Tredegar, Newbridge and Blackwood.
In Division One West, Bonymaen sealed a narrow victory over title rivals Carmarthen Athletic. Tries from Leon Gallacher, Alan Powell and Mick Clangy sealed a 27-22 win.
There was a thrilling finish at Builth Wells, where the league’s bottom side suffered the heartbreak of a last-minute defeat to Bridgend Athletic. Trailing 17-13 with just a minute to play, Athletic scrum-half Luke Hopper took a quick tap-penalty and broke through the home side’s defence to touch down and seal a dramatic late win.
Bridgend are off the mark for the season with an impressive victory against high-flying Tonmawr. Wing Tom Daley and No 8 Dave Smith scored the tries as the home side sealed a 20-13 win.
Elsewhere, Whitland stay top of the table courtesy of a 26-10 victory at Narbeth, while there were also wins for Corus and Llangennech, who won 23-22 thanks to a last-gasp penalty from fly-half Aled Roberts.
