Children’s book illustrator Rebecca Harry visited Canton Library yesterday for a special World Book Day meeting of their junior reading group The Bold, Brainy Bookworms.
Eleven children aged 8 to 12 enjoyed a demonstration from Rebecca, learning how she draws her best loved character Ruby the duckling.
Rebecca explained how she became an artist, first studying in school, college and then university. Rebecca also read aloud one of the Ruby stories, asking the children to imagine how they thought a particular scene would look. The children drew their interpretation of the scene with help and encouragement from Rebecca.
World Book Day is the largest celebration of books and reading in the UK.
Senior Library Assistant Ceri Rowlands said “It was a lovely evening and Rebecca was a complete star, the children thought she was totally amazing and everyone went home inspired”.
Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “World Book day is a great event to get children interested in reading. I would like to thank Rebecca for taking the time to come along to Canton library and help inspire the children.”
The Bold, Brainy Bookworms for children ages 8+ meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 5.30pm. Contact the library for details on 029 2022 9935.
