An initiative to encourage more women to take-up running is being introduced across Powys.
The Run Your Life project will set-up five new running groups across the county with the emphasis firmly on fun, non-competitive fitness for absolute beginners. The aim is to encourage more local women to improve their health, fitness, confidence and social networks.
The project is a partnership between Powys County Council and Sport Wales (formerly Sports Council for Wales).
Co-ordinator Jan Davies, said: “The groups are targeted at the absolute beginners and are suitable for women of all ages, shapes and sizes.
“They will start with walking and slow running, with the running time gently built up over time. Everyone will be supported to go at their own pace and to chat to others in the group as they go along. The focus is simply on enjoyment and mutual support.”
The Run Your Life running groups will be set-up in Ystradgynlais, Brecon, Llandrindod Wells, Rhayader and Newtown. Some of the groups may be attached to existing local running clubs, but all will be led by volunteers who are qualified and licensed UK Athletics Running Fitness coaches.
Jan added: “Many of the leaders themselves started as complete beginners in recent years and can remember what it’s like starting out. What they all have in common is that they enjoy supporting other women to achieve their goals, value the individual and want to provide a supportive relaxed environment in which women can enjoy building their health and fitness through running.”
