Following a successful two years touring to places such as Llangarron, Abergavenny, Cwmaman and Talgarreg, Academi is once again taking to the road to learn more about Wales’ literary heritage. 2010 will see the launch of a new series led by Dr John Pikoulis. The first tour will focus on the life and work of Welsh writer Horatio Clare.
Running for the Hills with Horatio Clare will take place on Saturday 24 July 2010. Horatio Clare (1973 – ) is a writer, radio producer and journalist, whose book Running for the Hills (John Murray, 2006) tells the story of his parents’ purchase of a farm in the Black Mountains above Cwmdu and his childhood memories there. The tour will include a discussion of this book with Horatio, plus a guided walk from the village to the farm where he lived. The walk, which is just over 2 miles long, will be illustrated with readings from Running for the Hills and general commentary from both Horatio and Dr John Pikoulis.
Horatio’s other publications include A Single Swallow: Following an Epic Journey from South Africa to South Wales (Chatto & Windus, 2009) which was long listed for the 2010 Wales Book of the Year Award and Truant: Notes from the Slippery Slope (John Murray, 2007) which seeks to explore and explain ‘the mad elephant years’ as the book calls them, the period in which young men are most likely to take drugs, get into fights, go to jail and commit suicide.
The tour will depart from and return to Cardiff. For specific details of the timetable or for information on other tours taking place in 2010, please contact Academi.
