Golfers from around the world will ‘tea off’ at the Ryder Cup with Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar when the event begins at the Celtic Manor Resort this week.
The decision to use Fairtrade is just one step the organisers have taken to ensure the event is as sustainable as possible. They will also be sourcing local produce and employing strict recycling guidelines.
Elen Jones, the national co-ordinator for Fair Trade Wales said:
‘It is perfect that the first Fair Trade Ryder Cup is being held in a Fairtrade City in the world’s first Fair Trade Nation. The decision to use Fairtrade produce shows strong leadership from the event organisers. It is important for organisers of big, national and international events like this to recognize the importance of sustainable sourcing and the positive impact it has for the lives of producers, their families and communities in developing countries.
Let’s hope this trend continues in Wales and beyond, and that Fair Trade becomes part of all our national and international events.’
