Safe routes in Abergavenny: consultation starts

Cyclists and pedestrians are being asked to give their views on travel plans for Abergavenny.

People are asked to comment as part of an initiative that aims to create safer and more pleasant conditions for pedestrians and cyclists to be able to get around their community, and encourage sustainable transport.

The proposals for the town have been formulated after a review of travel plans produced by the schools in Abergavenny, requests from Sustrans, Abergavenny Walking and Cycling Group, CAIR and the local community.

Monmouthshire County Council will bid for money from Welsh Assembly Government’s Safe Routes in the Communities funding for 2011-2012.

The proposals include providing dropped kerbs, pedestrian crossings, cycleways and footways at the following locations in the town.

  • Hereford Road
  • Grosvenor Road
  • Park Crescent
  • Chapel Road
  • Penypound Road
  • Monmouth Road – near Plas Derwen
  • Castle Meadows

Mark Youngman, Transport Policy Manager at Monmouthshire County Council, said:

“Before finalising our bid, we would like to hear the views of those who live and work in the town. The exhibition is displayed in Abergavenny One Stop Shop and shows the outline proposals.”

The exhibition is on show from 11am Thursday 7th October to 5pm Friday 8th October.

Officers will be present on both days to answer any questions. For more information contact the Transport Policy Manager on [email protected] with Abergavenny Walking and Cycling Routes in the subject title of your e-mail.
