Swansea Council is investing nearly £400,000 into making roads in communities safer.
The Council’s Road Safety Team has helped a number of schools successfully bid for funding from the Assembly’s Safer Routes in Communities programme to help make the safety changes.
The improvements will be implemented near the schools and will help provide safer walking routes for children and for elderly people.
Measures such as pelican crossings, speed reduction humps, better signage and improvements to pavements will be included as part of the programme.
Brynmill Primary School has been awarded £113,000 while Penclawdd Primary has received £62,000.
Clase Primary, Bishop Vaughan and Graig Infants have also jointly received £205,000 as part of the Clase Caemawr Communities First area.
All the safety schemes are set to be approved at Cabinet this week.
Cllr John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment in Swansea Council, said: “Making our roads safer for children to use is important if we are to encourage more children and parents to walk to school.
“Our road safety team is working with schools throughout Swansea to assist them in bidding for funding to carry out this important safety work.”
Allison Gough, Swansea Council’s Safer Routes in Communities Officer, has been assisting schools in developing travel plans.
Alison said: “To enable schools to secure the funding, they must submit individual travel plans. This is a great way of getting the communities involved and let them decide for themselves what is needed to help make their community safer.”
